Did you know that James B Castle High School wasn’t always called that? It began its life in 1927 as the Reverend Benjamin Parker School. This humble elementary and intermediate school served Kaneohe Oahu. It was a far cry from the sprawling campus we see before us today.
James B Castle High School stands proudly before us. It’s a testament to the growth of Kaneohe a community once rural now densely populated. The school opened in 1951. It was built to alleviate overcrowding at Benjamin Parker School. Principal Clinton Kanahele and his 700 students made the move to the new Benjamin Parker Annex.
The school’s original name reflected its humble beginnings. Its transformation into James B Castle High School in 1951 marked a significant shift. This was a step towards a future dedicated to secondary education. It was named after James Bicknell Castle son of a prominent missionary. The Castle family’s land donation facilitated the school’s construction.
Imagine the excitement of those first 750 students. They enrolled in grades 7 through 12. A library an office and four classrooms were still under construction. The first graduating class in 1952 consisted of just 108 seniors. This was a remarkable achievement given the school’s nascent stages.
Castle High School has a rich history. It’s a history filled with academic excellence. It’s also filled with remarkable achievements in the arts and athletics. The Castle High Marching Band made history. They became the first high school band in the United States to perform at the East-West Shrine Game. This is a truly impressive accomplishment.
Over the years James B Castle High School has evolved. It now offers a range of programs. These programs cater to a diverse student body. Smaller Learning Communities (SLCs) were introduced in 2012.
