The Jamaat Al Muslimin has a long history, dating back to the early 20th century when Muslims from the Balkans and Syria settled in Chicago. The mosque was originally a social service organization devoted to Bosnian Muslims called the Dzemijetul Hajrije, which means “The Benevolent Society”. The members would meet in Bosnian coffeehouses until eventually, they opened the first Islamic Sunday School with textbooks and curriculum under the guidance of a Bosnian scholar named Sheikh Kamil Avdich. It has been the longest lasting incorporated Muslim community in the entire US. The mosque is a testament to the resilience and adaptability of the Muslim community, and today it continues to serve as a place of worship, education, and community gathering for Muslims in Chicago.
