“Shallow pond of caymans” That’s what the indigenous people called Jacarepaguá centuries ago. The name perfectly captures the essence of this vibrant Rio de Janeiro neighborhood. Its history is a captivating blend of nature and urban development.

Jacarepaguá boasts a land area of 29.27 square miles. In 2010 it housed a population of 157326. Nestled in Rio’s West Zone it lies between the Maciço da Tijuca and the Serra da Pedra Branca mountains. The upscale Barra da Tijuca neighborhood separates Jacarepaguá from the sea.

But Jacarepaguá is more than just geography. It’s a tapestry woven from diverse threads. It’s home to a multitude of sub-areas. Each one a unique neighborhood in its own right. These include Anil Curicica Cidade de Deus Freguesia Gardênia Azul Pechincha Praça Seca Rio das Pedras Tanque Taquara and Vila Valqueire. Each possesses its distinct character.

This sprawling neighborhood is known for its large open spaces. They have hosted major events such as the Rock in Rio music festival. Jacarepaguá also houses the Camorim center of the Pedra Branca State Park. Created in 1974 this 12500-hectare park is one of Rio’s greenest areas. Vargem Grande and Vargem Pequena are particularly rich in natural beauty.

Jacarepaguá’s dynamism extends beyond its natural beauty. It’s a center for media production. It’s the biggest hub for TV recording studios in Latin America. Here you’ll find Projac Globo’s studios the largest in Latin America. RecNov Record’s studio Band’s studio and the Polo de Cinema e Video studio are also located here. Even Televisa the Mexican broadcaster is expanding its presence in this dynamic area.

Jacarepaguá is predominantly middle-class. Yet it also sits near some of Rio’s largest favelas. Cidade de Deus is the most well-known but others such as Favela Covanca and Barão exist nearby.

But Jacarepaguá’s story doesn’t end there. Its past resonates in its present. The Autódromo de Jacarepaguá hosted the Formula One Brazilian Grand Prix. This was from 1978 to 1989. It also hosted the Rio de Janeiro motorcycle Grand Prix between 1995 and 2004. This legacy of high-speed thrills continues to define the area’s identity.

The Olympic Village built for the 2007 Pan-American Games added another layer to Jacarepaguá’s narrative. The legacy of the Games lives on. The area remains a vibrant reminder of Rio’s international presence on the world stage.

So as you stand here today take a moment. Consider the multifaceted history of Jacarepaguá. From its indigenous roots to its modern-day vibrancy. It is a true testament to Rio de Janeiro’s rich and ever-evolving identity.
