Ever wondered about the hidden history of Jacarepaguá-Roberto Marinho Airport?

Right here before us stands Jacarepaguá-Roberto Marinho Airport a significant landmark in Rio de Janeiro’s aviation history. More than just a gateway for general aviation it holds a rich past dating back to 1927. That year the Compagnie Générale Aéropostale began its ambitious project linking France and South America. Its planes touched down not only at the military Campo dos Afonsos airport but also at a smaller private facility Latecoère Field. This field would eventually evolve into Jacarepaguá Airport. Although Campo dos Afonsos was larger and more accessible its approach was tricky and weather conditions were unpredictable. This made Jacarepaguá Airport a valuable alternative.

The airport’s story is full of twists and turns. In 1944 it became a Brazilian Air Force base for flight training. Later in 1966 it was decommissioned becoming a general aviation airfield. It wasn’t until 1969 that the construction of a terminal apron and hangars began. The official opening of the renovated airport was on January 19 1971. The Aeroclube do Brasil a prominent Brazilian flying club became a major user after moving its headquarters there in 1971. They previously operated at Manguinhos Airport which closed in 1961.

Jacarepaguá Airport underwent significant renovations in 2007 in preparation for the 2007 Pan American Games. The runway was extended the terminal upgraded and the control tower received new equipment. Infraero even considered the airport capable of handling increased traffic during the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Today Jacarepaguá-Roberto Marinho Airport’s primary operations involve helicopters and aircraft supporting offshore oilfields. This demonstrates its adaptability. There have also been periods of scheduled passenger flights such as the notable operations of TwoFlex between October 28 2019 and March 13 2020. These flights were later resumed by Azul Conecta under a new name in October 31 2022. On August 18 2022 Pax Aeroportos took over the airport’s operation from Infraero gaining a 30-year concession.

This humble airport is a testament to Rio’s vibrant aviation history. It’s a place where history innovation and the constant hum of activity come together. From its early days as an alternative landing strip to its current role in offshore support Jacarepaguá-Roberto Marinho Airport continues to play a vital role in the city’s story. Its future remains as dynamic and exciting as its past.
