Perhaps Jacaré’s unassuming streets hold more stories than meet the eye. Jacaré is a neighborhood in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. This area blends residential life and industry. It also borders Manguinhos, Benfica, and other communities.

The name Jacaré comes from the river. Yacaré means “that which is twisted or sinuous”. This refers to the winding path of the Jacaré River. The river begins in the Elefante hills. It crosses the region that once belonged to the Engenho Novo of the Jesuits.

After the Jesuits were expelled, the estate was divided. It became smaller farms and rural properties. Owners like Paim Pamplona and Adriano Müller developed Jacaré. They created the main streets we see today, like Dois de Maio and Lino Teixeira.

From the 1920s, Jacaré began to urbanize and develop. Around this time, the Favela do Jacarezinho began. It grew between the Jacaré River and the Cruzeiro Factory. Later, it became General Electric or GE. In 1992, Jacarezinho split from Jacaré. It became its own administrative region.

In the 1960s, Governor Carlos Lacerda encouraged industries to move to Jacaré. This created the Complexo Industrial do Jacaré. It was located between the Jacaré River and other streets. The complex included about 15 streets. There were shoe, bag, and pharmaceutical factories. There were also glass, clothing, and metalworking industries.

Lacerda also opened a passage under the Linha Auxiliar. This connected Jacaré to Avenida Dom Helder Câmara. Locals called it “Buraco do Lacerda”. Due to economic crises in the late 20th century, many industries closed. Today, the area has many closed warehouses. These buildings are surrounded by low-income communities.

The main access route is the Linha Verde. It is connected to the Noel Rosa tunnel. It was partially built in the 1970s. It was planned in the 1960s. This connects Jacaré to Vila Isabel and Maria da Graça.

Jacaré is an official neighborhood in the Grande Méier region. However, there is also a favela with the same name. This makes some people believe the entire neighborhood is a favela. This is only true for the area around Rua Camboriú. Jacarezinho is both an official neighborhood and a favela.

Jacaré is part of the administrative region of Méier. The region includes other neighborhoods. These are Abolicao, Agua Santa, and Cachambi. It also includes Encantado, Engenho de Dentro, and Engenho Novo.

With an interesting mix of residential areas and industrial history, Jacaré offers a glimpse into Rio’s multifaceted urban landscape. The area’s story from its river’s namesake to its industrial boom tells a unique story. It reflects the city’s dynamic evolution.
