“Ever wonder where Jakarta’s sweetest revolution began?” I ask. That’s the story of J.CO Donuts & Coffee. It is a tale of inspiration and Indonesian ingenuity.
J.CO Donuts & Coffee didn’t start as an American franchise. Instead, it blossomed from the vision of Johnny Andrean. He is the owner of the BreadTalk chain in Indonesia. Johnny frequently traveled to the USA. He sampled diverse donuts. He found unique flavors. Initially, Johnny wanted to buy a USA donut franchise. However, he saw limitations in the products. He noted issues in raw materials and quality control.
Johnny decided to develop his own donut production. He wouldn’t buy a USA franchise. He aimed to perfect the donut’s form and taste. He would focus on ingredient quality and production.
Upon returning to Indonesia, he created a donut shop. Its concept mirrored those in the USA. Johnny observed that Indonesian donut shops lacked open kitchens. He introduced this at J.CO. Customers could watch the donut-making process. They could see mixing ingredients to the final product.
Machines are used at J.CO to mix ingredients. They also cook and apply toppings. Human touch is reserved for shaping the donuts. Even then, they use tools.
Most machines were imported from the USA. Over 50% of ingredients come from abroad. Chocolate is sourced from Belgium. Milk comes from New Zealand. Coffee beans are imported from Italy and Costa Rica. This makes J.CO a premium product in Indonesia.
Some see a similarity between J.CO’s logo and Starbucks’. However, look closely. They are different. J.CO Donuts & Coffee uses a peacock symbol. The peacock represents beauty, neatness, gentleness and eternity.
Johnny spent three years preparing to launch J.CO Donuts & Coffee. He set production standards and procedures. He also selected ingredients. He refined product quality, production, and business operations.
J.CO first opened at Supermall Karawaci Tangerang. This is near Jakarta. The opening date was June 26, 2005. Johnny owns and controls all J.CO Donuts & Coffee locations in Indonesia. Stores abroad are franchised. The BreadTalk group owns the Singapore franchise.
J.CO has grown rapidly since 2005. It became a market leader against Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts.
The most popular donut flavor is Alcapone. It is inspired by the gangster Al Capone. There are over 45 flavors. Some are inspired by local tastes. These include kaya and kurma donuts.
Other products include J.CRONUT croissant donuts. Also available are J.POPS mini donuts and J.CLUB donut sandwiches. For those wanting frozen yogurt, there is J.COOL. Gourmet pastries, sandwiches, and salads are also on offer. J.COFFEE features classic to iced coffee blends.
Johnny Andrean started with Johnny Andrean Salon. He brought BreadTalk to Indonesia. He saw a donut trend in America. He modified donut making in Indonesia.
J.CO’s open kitchen design comes from the USA and Canada. They learned about presentation from Europe. Display techniques came from Japan. J.CO uses public relations more than ads. They find word-of-mouth is more effective.
So, as you enjoy your J.CO treat remember its story. It began with a vision. It combined global inspiration and local execution. It all started with Johnny Andrean’s dream.
