Submerged beneath the very pontoons we stand on rests a relic of a bygone era, the J-7 Submarine wreck. The J-7 Submarine wreck isn’t just a rusted hull; it’s a time capsule, a silent sentinel guarding tales of maritime history. The J-7, a British World War I submarine, was gifted to Australia in 1919. As the last of its class ever built, it speaks volumes about a pivotal era in naval warfare. Originally intended for speed and agility, the J-7, along with its sister ships, couldn’t keep pace with surface vessels. Despite this, it played a crucial role in several engagements, even heavily damaging two German battleships. After its service in World War I, the J-7 was transferred to the Royal Australian Navy. However, changing priorities and budget constraints led to its decommissioning in 1922. In a final act of service, the J-7 was sunk in 1927 to act as a breakwater for the Sandringham Yacht Club. Today, the J-7 Submarine wreck is an unexpected sight amidst the modern yachts, a poignant reminder of the ever-changing tides of history.
