Maps of Japan and Iwami Province underwent significant changes in the 1870s. This was when the prefecture system was introduced. Yet, even then, Iwami retained its identity for specific purposes. Treaties in 1894 explicitly recognized Iwami. This recognition occurred in agreements between Japan and the United States, and Japan and the United Kingdom.
