Listen closely. Did you know that the Caracalla Dance Theatre is more than just a dance company? It is a symbol of cultural innovation in the Middle East. Right here, at the Ivoire Caracalla dance school, the legacy of a pioneer lives on.

Abdel Halim Caracalla founded the Caracalla Dance Theatre in 1968. It was a time when pursuing a career in the arts was not common. Can you imagine the courage it took to follow such a path? Caracalla started with only ten dancers. He persevered through social stigmas and the Lebanese Civil War from 1975 to 1990.

Caracalla trained in his native Baalbek. Later he apprenticed under Martha Graham in London. Graham forever influenced him. He blended traditional Lebanese dance with Western techniques. This unique Caracalla style set him apart. His daughter Alissar Caracalla is now the company’s choreographer. She continues her father’s vision. Her brother Ivan is the company director.

The Caracalla Dance Theatre has performed worldwide. It has graced stages from New York’s Kennedy Centre to London’s Sadler’s Wells Theatre. The company has also performed at the Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris. Even more, the Caracalla Dance Theatre has its own theatre in Beirut. This is home to the Caracalla Dance School.

Abdel Halim Caracalla created over 20 ballets and musicals. These include adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays. “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Taming of the Shrew” are among them. The Caracalla Dance Theatre’s costumes are also special. They feature fabrics and designs from across the Arab world. Each costume is handmade and unique. They shimmer with vibrant colours.

The Caracalla Dance Theatre has received many awards. It has gained global press recognition. It has collaborated with renowned artists. King Hussein of Jordan and the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage supported Abdel-Halim. In 2008, Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan awarded him the Order of Independence. This recognised his contribution to Middle Eastern arts.

Alissar Caracalla has added an innovative spirit to the Caracalla style. She choreographed “Elissa, Queen of Carthage”. Also she choreographed “Sailing the Silk Road” and “FINIQIA: The Legend Lives On”.

Even today the Caracalla Dance Theatre adapts to modern challenges. During the COVID-19 pandemic they held Zoom workout sessions. This ensured the dancers were ready to return to the stage. The Caracalla Dance Theatre remains anchored in tradition while embracing modernity. It blends Middle Eastern heritage with Western technique.
