Stepping onto the grounds of Ivanhoe Girls’ Grammar School, you’re greeted by a fascinating mix of history and innovation. This school has woven itself into the fabric of Ivanhoe, a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, since its founding in 1903. Founded by Mrs Frances Lowe, the school once stood on the corner of Marshall Street and Sherwood Road, with only two students.

The school’s name, however, holds a deeper connection to the past. It pays homage to “Ivanhoe,” the renowned novel by Sir Walter Scott. The school’s house system proudly reflects the names of characters and locations from the book: Rotherwood, Locksley, Rowena, Ashby, Oswald, and York. Each house has its unique color and competes in various academic and athletic fields.

While Ivanhoe Girls is a private school, it welcomes over 850 students, ranging from the Early Learning Centre (ELC) to Year 12. It’s a place where talented young minds are nurtured and where the pursuit of knowledge is encouraged. Ivanhoe Girls is a school for girls who are not only academically gifted but also those who are passionate about making a positive impact on the world. They’ve always encouraged their students to make their mark on the world. Back in 1998, the senior class was tasked with raising funds for a charitable organization of their choice. The result? A charity concert held annually. The Class of 2012 achieved a record-breaking $67,500 AUD for BeyondWater.

Today, you can see the school’s spirit in its architectural landscape. From the original schoolhouse in Noel Street, now transformed into a junior library, to the spacious Doris Walker Centre that houses the Senior Library, the school’s history is intertwined with its contemporary development. The Performing Arts Centre, a beacon visible from Upper Heidelberg Road, showcases the school’s dedication to the arts, hosting school functions and even the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra. Step inside and you’ll feel the energy of the school, its history resounding in every corner.
