This is the Ivan Yarygin Statue in Moscow. It commemorates Ivan Sergeyevich Yarygin a dominant force in freestyle wrestling. He is celebrated for his achievements and his contributions to the sport.

Ivan Yarygin was born on November 7 1948. He was a Soviet and Russian heavyweight freestyle wrestler. His wrestling career highlights are truly impressive. Between 1970 and 1980 Ivan won nearly all his major international competitions. An exception was the 1970 and 1974 European championships where he placed second.

In 1972 and 1976 Yarygin became an Olympic champion. He was the first wrestler to win an Olympic competition with straight pin victories. He earned no foul points. In 1973 he became a world champion. Ivan was a five-time World Cup winner. He never lost a single match in World Cup competition.

He won European championships in 1972 and from 1975 to 1976. Ivan also set a record for the fastest pin victory in World Cup history at 27 seconds. His dominance in wrestling was clear.

After his retirement in 1980 Ivan Yarygin became a coach. From 1982 to 1992 he led the Soviet freestyle wrestling team. From 1993 until his death in 1997 he headed the Russian Wrestling Federation. People regarded Yarygin as an exceptional upper-body wrestler. He was known for his physique and aggressive style. He always aimed to pin his opponents. Most of his wins came via rapid fireman’s lift. He would slam his opponent to the mat.

Sadly Ivan Yarygin’s life ended tragically. He died in a car crash in 1997. However his legacy lives on. The Golden Grand Prix Ivan Yarygin Tournament is held annually in Krasnoyarsk. It is one of the hardest tournaments in the world. Top wrestlers come to Siberia for this event. Teams from Dagestan and Chechnya compete alongside an All-Russia selection.

This statue in Moscow is not the only memorial to Ivan Yarygin. A sports venue in Krasnoyarsk bears his name. Also one of Russia’s strategic bomber aircrafts is named after him. A modern civil aviation plane is similarly named. The Nikulin Circus keeps his memory alive with his image.

Look closely at the statue. Feel the strength and determination it embodies. It is a reminder of Ivan Yarygin’s lasting impact on wrestling and on all who strive for greatness. It reminds us of the heights that can be achieved through hard work. He was the lion of the mat. His impact remains.
