The Alvalade area itself has a rich history. Its name may come from the Arabic “Al Balade” meaning “inhabited and walled place.” In 1323 a battle occurred here between King Dinis I and his son Afonso IV. Queen Isabel stopped the conflict. A monument to her stands in Alvalade.
Alvalade’s urban design began with the “Urbanization Plan of the Southern Zone of Avenida Alferes Malheiro.” This plan aimed to address housing shortages. Architects created diverse styles. This made Alvalade an architectural experiment.
In 1944 the “neighborhood unit” shaped Alvalade. Eight cells spanned three parishes. Significant city roads bound these cells. Avenida do Brasil lies to the north. Avenida Gago Coutinho is to the east. The railway line is to the south. Rua de Entre-campos and Campo Grande are to the west.
Within this area eight standard project types emerged. Type A features open space on pilotis. Type B designates ground-level commercial space. Types E F and G are corner variations. Type H is for small commercial buildings within courtyards. Construction began in 1952.
Alvalade incorporated rural elements into its urban fabric. Roads clusters and isolated structures were integrated. This approach valued existing elements.
Alvalade became a parish in 1959. It separated from Campo Grande. São João de Brito parish was created the same year. It later merged into Alvalade. The parish is dedicated to Saint Joana Princess.
