“Knowledge is power” echoes through the halls of İTÜ Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi. This faculty at Istanbul Technical University stands as a testament to the pursuit of knowledge. Its story began not as İTÜ Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi but as the Faculty of Fundamental Sciences in 1971.

Imagine the scene. Departments from across the university converged. They were united by a common goal. That goal was teaching fundamental sciences. Meteorology joined them. Chairs of various science departments gathered. This marked the start of something significant.

In 1971, the Meteorological Engineering program opened its doors. Students flocked to this new field of study. Two years later, Mathematical Engineering followed suit. The first graduates emerged in 1977 ready to shape the world.

However, change was constant. In 1977, economics-related departments split off. They formed the Faculty of Management Engineering. This new faculty focused on the growing field of management.

İTÜ Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi continued to evolve. Physics Engineering began teaching in 1981. Meteorology Engineering then joined the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 1982. The Faculty of Fundamental Sciences changed its name. It became Istanbul Technical University Faculty of Science and Letters on July 20, 1982.

Chemistry underwent a transformation. Six departments merged into one. These included Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry. Physics Chemistry, Theoretical Chemistry and Coordination Chemistry also joined. This unified department strengthened the faculty’s focus.

The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences arrived in 1997. Its mission was clear. To teach and research humanities and social sciences. It enriches students’ understanding of society.

Molecular Biology and Genetics emerged in 1998. It started as the Department of Biology. Its emphasis lay in molecular biology and genetics. In 1999, twenty-two students enrolled. By 2000, it officially became the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics.

Today, İTÜ Fen-Edebiyat Fakültesi includes several key departments. Mathematics explores abstract concepts. Physics Engineering bridges theory and application. Chemistry unravels the secrets of matter. Humanities and Social Sciences examines society. Molecular Biology and Genetics delves into the building blocks of life.
