Imagine students bustling around, their minds brimming with architectural visions. This is the ITU Faculty of Architecture, a cornerstone of design education in Istanbul. It stands as a testament to Turkey’s rich history and its dedication to innovation.

The ITU Faculty of Architecture was the first institution in the Ottoman Empire dedicated to architectural education. This happened in 1884. The faculty is housed in the historic Taşkışla building in Beyoğlu. The Taşkışla building itself has a fascinating past.

Originally, the English architect William James Smith designed it as a military hospital. Construction took place from 1846 to 1852. During the Crimean War, wounded French soldiers received treatment here. Later, it served as barracks. A powerful earthquake damaged the building in 1894. Eminent architects Raimondo D’Aronco and Alexander Vallaury restored it.

In 1944, Taşkışla was allocated to Istanbul Technical University. Professors Paul Bonatz and Emin Onat collaborated on renovation projects. They transformed it to house the faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The Rectorate was also placed here.

The building’s architecture showcases a Neo-Renaissance style. A lofty courtyard features an oval pool and linden trees. The facades incorporate string courses and cornices. Eight fluted Ionic columns support a prominent portico. The design exudes stable integrity and calm simplicity.

Today, the ITU Faculty of Architecture comprises five departments. These are Architecture, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban and Regional Planning. This comprehensive setup encourages a multidisciplinary approach to design education.

The faculty boasts state-of-the-art labs and workshops. These facilities support both undergraduate and graduate students. Labs include the Construction Materials Lab and the Digital Fabrication Lab. There is also the IstanbulON Urban Mobility Lab.

The Faculty Library holds a vast collection of resources. It includes reference books and theses on architecture, urbanism, and design. A periodicals library offers a quiet study environment.

The ITU Faculty of Architecture has always prioritized international relationships. Numerous leading foreign academics have taught here. These include Paul Bonatz and Clemens Holzmeister. In 2008, the faculty was the first school outside the USA to gain recognition from the National Architecture Accreditation Board.

Under the Erasmus+ Program, the faculty maintains agreements with over 100 architecture schools in Europe. Each year, numerous students participate in exchanges. This strengthens its global connections.

As you stand here at the ITU Faculty of Architecture, consider its legacy. It’s a place where history and innovation converge. Generations of architects have honed their skills within these walls. The building itself tells a story of transformation and resilience. The ITU Faculty of Architecture continues to shape the future of design in Turkey and beyond.
