Whispers of faith echo through the hallowed halls of the İTÜ Abdülhakim Sancak Camii. This mosque isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of Istanbul, a beacon of unity amidst the bustling city. The İTÜ Abdülhakim Sancak Camii stands proudly on the Ayazağa Campus of Istanbul Technical University. Its modern architecture seamlessly blends with the 1400-year-old tradition of Islamic design. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan himself inaugurated this magnificent structure, a symbol of faith and modernity intertwined.
The İTÜ Abdülhakim Sancak Camii is a sprawling complex, encompassing 11,500 square meters. The mosque features a colonnaded courtyard, ablution facilities, and surrounding areas that invite contemplation and connection. Its location offers breathtaking views from the university campus, further enhancing its majestic presence. The mosque’s design embodies the concept of “unity in diversity, diversity in unity.” This philosophy is reflected not only in the main prayer hall but also in every architectural detail.
The minaret, soaring 39 meters high, resembles a giant pen, a fitting tribute to its location within a university. The mosque’s central dome, a marvel of engineering, measures 26 meters in diameter and reaches a height of 21 meters. The İTÜ Abdülhakim Sancak Camii boasts three levels: the lower ground floor, the main prayer hall, and a mezzanine. This spacious structure has a footprint of 790 square meters. With the inclusion of the mezzanine, the total construction area reaches 1,700 square meters.
The main prayer hall can accommodate 2,450 worshippers in traditional rows. With the courtyard, the mosque’s capacity expands to an impressive 4,000 people. The mosque’s interior is bathed in natural light, creating an atmosphere of serenity and openness. Light streams in from four sides, enhancing the spacious feel of the prayer hall. The natural stone minbar and kürsü (pulpit) complement the wooden accents, creating a harmonious blend of natural materials. Calligraphy adorns various parts of the mosque. The chosen verses and their messages intertwine with the architectural design, adding another layer of meaning to this sacred space. The İTÜ Abdülhakim Sancak Camii is more than just a building; it’s a vibrant hub where faith, education, and community converge.
