Why is Itasca called Itasca? You might think it’s named after some European explorer, but you’d be wrong. Itasca actually takes its name from a lake much further north: Lake Itasca, the source of the mighty Mississippi River. Itasca might not have the grandeur of a mighty river, but it has its own charm. A charm that has attracted people for over a century. Itasca was first settled in 1841 by a doctor from Boston named Elijah Smith. He was looking for a place to practice medicine, farm the land, and raise a family. He must have found what he was looking for because he stayed and even plotted out part of his land to create the village of Itasca. The railroad came through in 1873, connecting Itasca to Chicago and further afield. The village officially incorporated in 1890, with A.G. Chessman at the helm as its first Village President. Today, Itasca is a thriving suburb of Chicago, home to almost 10,000 people. It’s a place where history and progress seem to exist in harmony, with its charming historic district and its bustling business parks. Itasca might not be on the Mississippi River, but it carries with it the spirit of exploration and growth, just like its namesake.
