“A city built by Italians?” a curious voice piped up from the crowd gathered here. Welcome to the Italienisches Dörfchen. It stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Italian craftsmanship in Dresden. The Italienisches Dörfchen, meaning “Italian Village,” isn’t a village at all. It is a historic restaurant, nestled on Theaterplatz near the Hofkirche, Zwinger, and Semperoper. Its name, however, echoes a time when a small community of Italian artisans truly did reside here. In the 18th century, Gaetano Chiaveri, an Italian architect, was commissioned to build the magnificent Katholische Hofkirche. He brought with him a skilled team of Italian craftsmen and artists. These artisans, hailing from Chiaveri’s homeland, needed a place to live. They built a cluster of small houses near the construction site, on the steep left bank of the Elbe River. This settlement, reminiscent of the medieval Dombauhütten, served as both housing and workshops. The locals, observing this vibrant Italian enclave, began calling it the “Italienisches Dörfchen.” Over time, the little village evolved into a popular gathering spot. A restaurant was eventually established on this historic site. It adopted the charming name, “Italienisches Dörfchen.” Before World War I, a grand new building replaced the older structures. This new Italienisches Dörfchen, designed by Dresden’s renowned city architect Hans Erlwein, aimed to complement the architectural splendor of its neighbors, the Semperoper and the Hofkirche. After the reunification of Germany, the Italienisches Dörfchen underwent extensive reconstruction and restoration. Today, it stands as a testament to Dresden’s rich history, attracting both tourists and locals alike. Its prime location on Theaterplatz makes it a culinary and cultural hub. It’s a place where history comes alive, where you can almost hear the echoes of Italian artisans from centuries past.
