Its construction a tale spanning decades. It began in 1597 commissioned by Safiye Sultan wife of Murad III and later Valide Sultan. Davut Aga a skilled architect started the work. He unfortunately passed away in 1599. Dalgıç Ahmed Çavuş took over. The project however faced delays. Political turmoil and financial concerns stalled its progress. The location in Eminönü Istanbul’s bustling commercial center caused disputes. Safiye Sultan aimed to expand Islamic influence in a predominantly Jewish area. This decision however led to resentment among the Janissaries who saw it as unnecessary expense. Upon Mehmed III’s death in 1603 the project was abandoned. The partially built mosque fell into disrepair. Then came the Great Fire of 1660 which caused further damage. Hope arrived with Turhan Sultan mother of Mehmed IV. She decided to complete the mosque as an act of piety. She also ordered the construction of the nearby Spice Bazaar. In 1663 the construction resumed. Finally in 1665 the mosque was completed and inaugurated. It was renamed the New Valide Sultan Mosque. It later became known simply as the New Mosque. Its architecture is breathtaking. Marble columns support elegant arches. The dome 17.5 meters in diameter adds to its magnificence. The interior is adorned with Iznik tiles. The mihrab is a sight to behold with its gilded stalactites. A royal loge allowed members of the imperial court to attend services. A library added later houses unique pen works. The New Mosque’s mausoleum holds the remains of Turhan Hatice Sultan Mehmed IV and several later sultans and court members. It is more than just a place of worship. It’s a living history lesson. A breathtaking structure that whispers stories of faith power and resilience. Take your time to explore the details. Let the atmosphere transport you to another era.
