High on a Buda hill stands Istenhegy. Its name translates to God’s Mountain. A fitting title for a place steeped in history. For centuries this area was known as Raitzenkopf. A German name reflecting its past. This changed in 1847. That year Gabor Dobrentei’s christening brought a new name. The area officially became Istenhegy.

Istenhegy isn’t just a name. It’s a neighborhood in Budapest’s 12th district. It’s a place where history and nature intertwine. The 372-meter high Isten-hegy itself gives the area its character. Its slopes are now mostly built-up. Beautiful green residential areas cover the mountain. But parts retain their natural beauty. A small nature reserve exists. It protects a 0.4 hectare plot along Istenhegyi Street. The reserve reaches as far as Lorant Street. It was designated in 1995.

Radnoti Miklos a famous Hungarian poet found inspiration here. His poems “Love Poem on Istenhegy” and “Istenhegyi Garden” capture the area’s charm. The poems highlight Istenhegy’s beauty. They immortalize its place in literature. The poems evoke its peaceful atmosphere.
