Here stands Turkey’s first photography museum: the Istanbul Photography Museum. Established through the collaboration of Fatih Municipality and the Friends of Photography Association, this museum is a testament to the enduring power and beauty of photographic art.

The Istanbul Photography Museum resides in the historic Kadırga District near Sultanahmet. Kadırga boasts monumental mosques and civil architecture around its medieval square. Palaces and distinguished settlements marked this area during the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. The museum holds a special place in Istanbul’s historical narrative.

Opened to the public on November 19, 2011, the Istanbul Photography Museum occupies a 1,000-square-meter space within the Kadırga Cultural Center. The Friends of Photography Association manages and administers the museum. For years, this museum was a dream for photographers.

Inside the Istanbul Photography Museum, you will find five photography galleries, a photography archive, and a library. Four galleries span 60 square meters each, while a larger gallery covers 260 square meters. To properly illuminate the artwork, 118 meters of light path and 120 pieces of professional exhibition lighting enhance these galleries.

The Istanbul Photography Museum is committed to developing Turkish photographic art. The museum showcases photographs by Turkish artists. It also hosts exhibitions featuring both local and international artists.

Beyond exhibitions, the Istanbul Photography Museum actively publishes its own photographic books. Its rich library of images and publications welcomes the public during visiting hours. The museum provides a new cultural service to Istanbul. It offers collections, exhibitions, publications, a photo archive, a library, events, and training projects.

As you explore the Istanbul Photography Museum, consider the dedication and artistry behind each image. Think about the stories they tell and the moments they capture. This museum is more than just a collection of photographs. It is a celebration of visual storytelling and a tribute to the art of photography in Turkey.
