Nestled between the Bosphorus and the Golden Horn, Istanbul Erkek Lisesi stands as a testament to time and transition. Istanbul Erkek Lisesi, also known as Istanbul High School, has witnessed the ebb and flow of history since its inception in 1884. Originally named Numune-i Terakki, meaning “The Example of Progress,” Istanbul Erkek Lisesi began as a private institution founded by Mehmet Nadir Bey, a retired Navy Captain. He envisioned a school that would blend modern educational principles with traditional values. By 1891, the school flourished, boasting 600 students, and capturing the attention of the Ministry of Education. In 1896, Istanbul Erkek Lisesi transitioned into a public school. The school’s current home is the former Council of Ottoman Revenues and Debts Administration building. Designed by architects Alexander Vallaury and Raimondo D’Aronco, this architectural gem was inaugurated in 1882. Istanbul Erkek Lisesi moved into the building in 1933, under the direct order of Atatürk himself. The building’s yellow walls symbolize hope, while the black window frames and doors commemorate the students lost in the Battle of Gallipoli. The school’s colors, yellow and black, serve as a poignant reminder of the school’s history and embody the enduring spirit of Istanbul Erkek Lisesi. The school has a rich tradition of extracurricular activities. The Sakarya Scout Group, established in 1912, is the oldest in Turkey. The school also hosts an annual International Chess Festival and a vibrant Culture Week. Students and alumni connect with prominent figures from art and science. Istanbul Erkek Lisesi prides itself on its bilingual curriculum, where German and Turkish intertwine. Mathematics, science, and German language instruction are conducted in German. History, geography, and other subjects are taught in Turkish. This unique approach fosters fluency in both languages and provides students with a distinct academic advantage. The school also offers the German Abitur program. This allows graduates direct admission to German universities. Throughout its history, Istanbul Erkek Lisesi has consistently produced notable alumni. Among them are three Prime Ministers: Mesut Yılmaz, Necmettin Erbakan, and Ahmet Davutoglu. The school’s influence extends beyond the political arena. Its graduates have made significant contributions in science, business, the arts, and athletics.
