Have you ever wondered what it’s like to meet a walrus DJ? At the İstanbul Dolphinarium, that dream becomes a reality. İstanbul Dolphinarium isn’t just about dolphins. It’s a vibrant marine world nestled in a beautiful, calm setting along the Golden Horn. Europe’s largest indoor dolphin park, the İstanbul Dolphinarium opened in 2008. It’s a symbol of collaboration between Turkey and Russia. The complex covers a vast 8,695 square meters. Inside, 5,800 square meters house interconnected pools filled with seawater, totaling 3,100 cubic meters. The main pool alone is a marvel, with a 16.5-meter radius and a depth of 5 meters. The stars of the İstanbul Dolphinarium arrived from Russia in a specially designed flight, each creature in its own personal pool. Four shows, each about an hour long, fill the 950-seat amphitheater with wonder. The first show features Northern fur seals. These playful creatures, a male and a female, perform charming stunts. Did you know that the male Northern fur seal can be 4.5 times heavier than the female? Next, walruses take the stage. These massive creatures, weighing around 950 kg each, perform a surprising range of activities. They play basketball, do sit-ups, and even have a musical number with a saxophone-playing walrus. The third act introduces the “Sailor,” a 4-meter-long, 1,000-kg white whale. This “sea canary” serenades the audience and creates artwork. Finally, the dolphins appear. Prince, Princess, Matilda, and Gera, all bottlenose dolphins born in the park, showcase ballet, singing, and incredible jumps during their basketball game. Beyond the shows, İstanbul Dolphinarium offers interactive experiences. Visitors can swim with dolphins in the seawater pools, which are heated during the colder months. For those who prefer dry land, the “Meet the Dolphins” program allows close encounters and playful interactions. The İstanbul Dolphinarium is more than just a show venue.
