The museum’s design complements the K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7hane building. Gedik Ahmet Pasha built it in 1454 after the conquest of Istanbul. It served as both a sword workshop and a training center. Skilled sword masters known as “\u015fim\u015firk\u00e2r” worked here. Later the building became a clothing workshop for the Janissaries. It eventually transformed into a hospital. During the reign of Selim III it briefly returned to sword production. However it never regained its former importance.

In 1868 Mithat Pasha opened the School of Industry in this building. This marked the official closure of the K\u0131l\u0131\u00e7hane. The Sanayi Mektebi was the Ottoman Empire’s first modern art school. It provided training in foundry work and machinery. It evolved into the Sultanahmet Vocational and Technical Anatolian High School.

Today the \u0130stanbul Cumhuriyet E\u011fitim Tarihi M\u00fczesi welcomes visitors free of charge. It is open on weekdays. The \u0130stanbul Cumhuriyet E\u011fitim M\u00fczesi primarily attracts students and teachers. Museum studies students and foreign tourists also visit.
