Ever imagine walking through halls filled with a million objects? The Istanbul Archaeological Museum houses artifacts spanning nearly all periods of world history. It is more than just a museum. It is a journey through time.

Welcome to the Istanbul Archaeological Museum a complex of three museums in one. We have the Archaeological Museum the Museum of the Ancient Orient and the Tiled Kiosk Museum. Each building offers a unique window into the past.

Our story begins in the late 19th century. The Ottoman Empire realized the importance of preserving its historical artifacts. Sultan Abdülaziz inspired by European museums, wanted a similar institution in Istanbul. Thus the Istanbul Archaeological Museum was born. It is often called the first museum of Turkey.

Initially the collection was housed in the Hagia Irene Church. But space quickly became an issue. The artifacts moved to the Tiled Kiosk built in 1472 by Sultan Mehmed II. This beautiful structure became part of the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.

Enter Osman Hamdi Bey. He was appointed as the first curator and founder in 1881. Osman Hamdi Bey was not only an archaeologist. He was also a painter. His painting “Girl Reading the Quran” sold for millions.

Osman Hamdi Bey started the construction of the main building in 1881. It officially opened on June 13 1891. The architect Alexander Vallaury also designed the Pera Palace Hotel. The building’s facade was inspired by the Alexander Sarcophagus and the Sarcophagus of the Mourning Women. Both are housed right here in the Istanbul Archaeological Museum.

Inside this museum you will find countless treasures. The Alexander Sarcophagus is perhaps the most famous. It is a masterpiece of ancient art. Though named after Alexander the Great it is believed to be the sarcophagus of Abdalonymus the king of Sidon.

Don’t miss the glazed tile images from the Ishtar Gate of Babylon. They are stunning examples of ancient art and architecture. Also be sure to see the statues from Aphrodisias Ephesus and Miletus. These sculptures showcase the artistic skill of the ancient world.

One of the museum’s most significant holdings is the Treaty of Kadesh. It is the oldest known peace treaty in the world. This agreement was signed between Ramesses II of Egypt and Hattusili III of the Hittite Empire. A copy of this treaty even hangs in the United Nations Headquarters.

Another remarkable artifact is the tablet archive. It contains 75000 documents with cuneiform inscriptions. One of these tablets holds the oldest known love poem. Imagine the voices of the past echoing through these halls.

In 1991 the Istanbul Archaeological Museum received the European Council Museum Award. This award recognized the museum’s renovations and new displays. It is a testament to the museum’s commitment to preserving and presenting history.

As you explore remember that you are walking through history. Each artifact has a story. The Istanbul Archaeological Museum connects us to civilizations long past. It is a place of discovery and wonder. Take your time. Absorb the knowledge and beauty around you. This museum is a treasure trove of human history.
