The Istana’s imposing facade stands before you. A silent sentinel of Singapore’s history. Built in 1869 this magnificent palace initially served as the official residence of the British governor.

The Istana wasn’t always a symbol of Singaporean independence. It began life as Government House a testament to British colonial power. Its construction was overseen by John Frederick Adolphus McNair. He cleverly used convict laborers from India Ceylon and Hong Kong to reduce costs. The initial budget of $100000 quickly ballooned to $185000. The final cost almost doubled the initial projection.

The Istana’s architectural style is a fascinating blend of cultures. It reflects a neo-Palladian design popular in 18th-century India. Yet its layout incorporates elements of traditional Malay houses. Wide verandahs deep windows and panelled doors promote cross-ventilation perfect for Singapore’s tropical climate. The central three-story tower dominates the skyline. It’s a beautiful example of how different architectural styles can be seamlessly integrated.

During World War II the Japanese military occupied the Istana. Count Hisaichi Terauchi used it as his headquarters. Interestingly he treated the remaining staff well. They were instructed to resume their duties in their old uniforms. He mostly respected the building’s integrity. He simply redecorated a few rooms and removed items bearing the British Royal crest.

After Singapore gained self-governance in 1959 the Istana was renamed Istana Negara Singapura. Yusof Ishak Singapore’s first president took up residence. He notably chose to live in a bungalow on the grounds not the main building. He felt the main palace was too grand.

The Istana underwent extensive renovations between 1996 and 1998. These modernizations added space and updated the building’s mechanical systems. It now boasts six function rooms for state events and ceremonies.

Today the Istana remains the official residence of the President of Singapore. It’s also the office of the Prime Minister. Though no presidents or prime ministers have lived there since Devan Nair’s tenure. The Istana opens its doors to the public on five selected public holidays. The Changing of the Guards ceremony is a popular monthly attraction. This grand palace continues to stand as a symbol of Singapore’s rich past and its bright future.
