Imagine being a governor-general arriving at this grand building. This is Istana Negara. It is one of Indonesia’s seven presidential palaces. Located on Veteran Street in Central Jakarta it stands proudly.
Istana Negara’s story began in 1796. Jacob Andries van Braam, a Dutchman, started its construction. He wanted it as his residence. Van Braam held high government positions. The building was completed in 1804. Its design showcased the Indies Empire style. This style was popular in the late 18th century. Rijswijk-Molenvliet, now Harmoni, was the area’s most exclusive neighborhood.
For a brief period, the English ruled. Hugh Hope, a British commissioner, took over the building. Van Braam lived in a smaller wing.
In 1821, the Dutch government bought the house. It became the official residence of the governor-general. The original plan to use a larger building in Waterlooplein never materialized. Istana Negara was then named Hotel van den Gouverneur-Generaal.
Important events occurred here. Formal ceremonies and Indies Council Meetings took place weekly. Godert van der Capellen was the first governor-general to live here in 1820. However, Bogor Palace became the preferred residence.
In 1848, the first floor was removed. The room facing Koningsplein was redesigned. It was more open to the outside.
Later, a new palace was planned due to increasing administrative needs. This new palace, Koningsplein Palace, was completed in 1873. Together, they formed the governor-general’s palace compound.
Japan invaded in 1942. Governor-General Tjarda Van Starkenborch surrendered to the Japanese army here. Under the Japanese, it became the residence of the Saiko Shikikan. After Indonesia’s independence, the Dutch lion emblem was removed.
Many significant events have occurred in Istana Negara. The declaration of the cultuur stelsel system happened here. Also, the ratification ceremony of the Linggadjati Agreement took place in 1947. The recognition of Indonesia’s independence was celebrated here in 1949.
The Indies Empire style defines Istana Negara’s architecture. Initially, the building had two stories. In 1848, the upper floor was partly removed to create a more formal appearance.
Today, Istana Negara hosts important ceremonial activities. These include minister appointments and national meetings. It also serves as an administrative office for the Head of State.
Inside, you’ll find the main reception hall. It is used for exchanging state gifts. Next to it is the banquet hall. The palace also features a living room and the president’s office.
The palace has two main audience halls. Ruang Upacara hosts formal events. It features Javanese and Balinese Gamelan sets. Ruang Jamuan is used for state guest hospitality. It can accommodate 150 people.
Istana Negara stands as a symbol of Indonesia’s rich history. It has witnessed colonial rule and independence. The palace continues to play a vital role. It serves as a venue for important state functions.
