Isman Reis Camii

Osman Reis Camii whispers tales of Istanbul’s past. It stands as a testament to a time when skilled mariners shaped the city’s destiny. The Isman Reis Camii, also known as the Yalılar Camii, rests quietly in the İstinye neighborhood. It was built in 1635, a gift from the accomplished sailor Osman Reis. Imagine İstinye back then, a charming village nestled along the Bosphorus. Picture the original mosque standing proudly amidst an Armenian neighborhood. Osman Reis, the benefactor, purchased the land and saw the mosque’s construction through to completion. Fast forward to 1903. The Ahmet Afif Paşa Yalı, a stunning waterfront mansion, was built nearby. This yalı holds a unique distinction. It served as the filming location for the first Turkish adaptation of the famous novel “Aşk-ı Memnu” (Forbidden Love). Alexandre Vallaury, the architect of the yalı, also decided to rebuild the Osman Reis Camii. This gave the mosque a fresh, new appearance. Sadly, in the 1960s, progress took its toll. During the construction of the İstinye-Yeniköy road, the mosque’s courtyard and surrounding buildings were damaged. Only the mosque itself remained. Even nature tested its resilience. The devastating Marmara earthquake of 1999 caused further damage. Yet, the Isman Reis Camii endured, restored once again for future generations. The Isman Reis Camii’s simple square frame is painted in a striking yellow, accented by white corners and window frames, adding a lively touch. Inside, simplicity reigns. The minber, where sermons are delivered, and the kürsü, the imam’s preaching platform, are crafted from white-painted wood. Look up at the minaret. It’s unique with its single şerefe, a circular balcony encircling the structure, complete with railings. The Osman Reis Camii stands as a quiet sentinel. It has witnessed Istanbul’s transformation over centuries, a humble place of worship reflecting the city’s rich history.
