Islington Green War Memorial, a poignant reminder of sacrifice, has stood as a silent sentinel since its unveiling in 2007. This isn’t the first monument to grace this space though. A “temporary” memorial, erected in 1918, once stood here. Time took its toll, and by 2004, the old obelisk was showing its age. A decision was made to replace it with something new, something built to last. And so, the Islington Green War Memorial, as we see it today, was born. The new memorial is a striking sight. It’s an eight-tonne ring of pale granite, twisted into a shape reminiscent of a wreath. This unique design, the brainchild of artist John Maine, was chosen from a number of proposals. The stone itself travelled a long way to get here, all the way from Fujian province in eastern China. Look closely, and you’ll see the inscription, “In Memory of the Fallen”. It’s a simple message, but one that carries the weight of countless untold stories. The Islington Green War Memorial serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in past conflicts and a testament to the enduring human spirit.
