Island 88 was formerly known as Island Plaza. It is located in the suburb of Tanjong Tokong. The retail complex opened in 1995. It covers 500,000 sq ft or 46,000 m2.
Island Plaza was launched in 1995. It cost RM200 million. At that time, it was the most luxurious retail complex in Penang. It introduced high-end brands into Penang. Versace, Fila, Oshkosh B’gosh and Mizuno were among them. In 2005, Metrojaya became Island Plaza’s anchor tenant. It opened its first department store in Penang there.
The Asian Retail Mall Fund II purchased Island Plaza in 2007. They spent RM40 million on its renovation. Due to the emergence of numerous shopping malls, Island Plaza began to decline. Metrojaya’s department store closed in 2011. ARMF II started looking for investors to sell Island Plaza.
In 2020, Paul Law acquired Island Plaza. He is a Hong Kong property magnate. The mall underwent rebranding in 2023. It was renamed Island 88. The revitalisation of Island 88 involves integrating Hong Kong-inspired dining establishments. Lifestyle outlets are also planned.
Island 88 is situated opposite City Residence. It stands on Jalan Tanjong Tokong. This is the main thoroughfare running through Tanjong Tokong.
