“Can you feel the weight of history in this building?” he asked. You’re standing right in front of Islamisk Kulturcenter, the first mosque in Aarhus. It was established in 1979 on Christiansgade. The need for a shared place of worship spurred its creation. Muslims from diverse backgrounds, particularly Moroccan and Turkish communities, rallied together to make this a reality. The Islamisk Kulturcenter proudly holds the distinction of being Aarhus’ first Muslim sanctuary. This significance led it to be seen as the official representation of Islam in the city. The local government often consults them on matters related to Islam. Today, the Islamisk Kulturcenter welcomes Muslims of all origins. It is a truly intercultural mosque. While it boasts a strong membership of around 120 men who pay their dues, the membership extends to entire families. This means that women and children are equally part of the vibrant community of the Islamisk Kulturcenter.
