Could a mosque built in the 1980s truly capture the essence of centuries-old Islamic tradition? Here in front of us, the Islamic Center of Chicago stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community. While not a structure from a distant past, the Islamic Center holds a significant place in Chicago’s history. Established in Northbrook, a suburb about 25 miles north of downtown Chicago, it reflects the growth and evolution of the Muslim community in the region.

The story of the Islamic Center of Chicago begins not in the 1980s, but much earlier, in 1906. A group of Bosnian Muslim immigrants, seeking to preserve their cultural and religious identity in a new land, formed the Bosnian American Cultural Association in Chicago. This association, later renamed the Islamic Cultural Center to reflect its growing diversity, purchased a building in 1954, laying the groundwork for what would become a central hub for Muslims in the Chicago area. The dream of a dedicated mosque and school took shape in the 1960s. After years of planning and fundraising, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Islamic Center of Chicago took place in Northbrook in 1974.

The Center opened its doors in phases, with its prayer hall, designed to accommodate 500 worshippers, completed in 1988. This hall, crowned with a dome and flanked by a minaret, the first of its kind in Illinois, became a beacon of Islamic architecture in the state. The Islamic Center of Chicago stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community, a place where generations of Muslims have come together to pray, learn, and celebrate.
