Think of a singer trading his guitar for a school. That’s the story of Islamia Primary School. It stands here on Salusbury Road.

Islamia Primary School is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a testament to a dream. Yusuf Islam dreamed of a school rooted in Islamic values. He wanted a school providing a modern education.

Yusuf Islam was once known as Cat Stevens. He founded Islamia Primary School in October 1983. His vision was clear. He wanted to blend faith with learning.

Imagine the challenges. For thirteen years, the school campaigned. They sought public funding. Rejection followed rejection. Finally, in 1998, their persistence paid off. Islamia Primary School became the first Muslim school in Britain to receive government funding.

Prince Charles himself inaugurated the school’s voluntary aided status on May 10, 2000. He praised the school’s approach. It offered both secular and religious education.

Islamia Primary School grew. In 2010, plans emerged for an £8 million extension. It included a new two-story building. Brent Council, the school, and the government would jointly fund it. The expansion faced local opposition. But it eventually became part of Brent Council’s expansion project.

Today, Islamia Primary School has about 420 pupils aged 4 to 11. It follows the national curriculum. It also provides classes on religion. Arabic language studies are important too. The school aimed for 10% of its pupils to be non-Muslim.

Islamia Primary School has faced scrutiny. Ofsted inspections are crucial. In 2013, Ofsted rated the school as “Good”. The report highlighted the school community. It mentioned how engaged the children were in their learning. However, in 2022, an Ofsted inspection marked the school as “Inadequate.”

In 2013, Islamia Primary School won the Global Peace and Unity Education Award for Excellence. This recognized its contribution to UK primary schools.

Islamia Primary School is part of a larger educational branch. This includes Islamia Girls High School. It also includes Brondesbury College, a boys’ school.

The school strives to foster a love for learning. It encourages critical thinking. Islamia Primary School aims to nurture each child’s development. It wants to provide a strong academic and spiritually enriching environment. The goal is to equip children with the skills and knowledge. They need this to succeed in the modern world. All while remaining rooted in the teachings of the Quran.

So, as we stand here, remember Yusuf Islam’s vision. Remember the struggle for recognition. Remember the commitment to education and faith. Islamia Primary School continues to evolve. It shapes young minds. It contributes to the community. Its journey reflects dedication, resilience, and a passion for learning.
