Islam Jamaah. It translates roughly to Islamic Community. The group has been known as JI.
JI’s goal was to establish an Islamic state in Southeast Asia. This included Indonesia and other countries. JI was formally founded on January 1 1993. Abu Bakar Bashir and Abdullah Sungkar founded it. They were hiding in Malaysia at the time.
After the fall of the Suharto regime in 1998, both men returned to Indonesia. JI gained a terrorist reputation after this. Abdullah Sungkar established contact with Osama bin Laden’s Al-Qaeda network.
JI’s violent operations began during communal conflicts. These were in Maluku and Poso. Later, the group targeted U.S. and Western interests. This shift happened at the start of the U.S.-led war on terror.
JI’s terror plans in Southeast Asia were exposed. Authorities foiled a plot to set off bombs in Singapore.
In 2004, Abu Bakar Bashir created the Indonesian Mujahedeen Council. This council connected Islamist groups in Indonesia including JI.
JI had recruiting, training, and financial links to other militant groups. These included Al-Qaeda and the Abu Sayyaf Group.
Bashir became the spiritual leader of JI. Hambali became the military leader. JI kept a low profile in Malaysia. Their existence was publicized after the 2002 Bali bombings. Some suspected a link to Al-Qaeda or the Taliban.
Many countries and international organizations designated Jemaah Islamiyah a terrorist group. These include the United Nations, Australia, Canada, and the European Union.
Prior to the Bali bombings in 2002, the threat of JI was underestimated. After the attack, the U.S. State Department designated JI a Foreign Terrorist Organization.
In 2003, Indonesian police confirmed the existence of a regional cell. It was called Mantiqe-IV. It covered Irian Jaya and Australia.
JI is suspected of carrying out other attacks. These include the 2003 JW Marriott hotel bombing and the 2004 Australian embassy bombing. Also, the 2005 Bali bombings and the 2009 JW Marriott and Ritz-Carlton hotel bombings.
Most prominent figures in Jemaah Islamiyah have been captured or killed. This was mostly by Detachment 88 an Indonesian anti-terrorist squad. Some former leaders have renounced violence. They have even assisted governments in the war on terrorism.
In April 2008, the South Jakarta District Court declared JI an illegal organization. This happened when sentencing former leaders to prison.
In 2010, Indonesian authorities cracked down on the Jemaah Islamiyah network in Aceh.
The name Jemaah Islamiyah means Islamic Community in English. Critics suggested it be called Jemaah Munafiq. This translates to Hypocrites’ Community.
In 2024, key members of Jemaah Islamiyah in Indonesia dissolved the organization. This declaration was made at the National Counter Terrorism Agency.
