Marvelous Mexico City. Before you stands the Casa del Risco. This isn’t just any house. This is the former home of Isidro Fabela. A remarkable diplomat. A man who shaped Mexican foreign policy.

Isidro Fabela was more than a diplomat. He was a lawyer. A writer. A teacher. A governor. Even a historian. He was born in Atlacomulco in 1882. His family moved to Mexico City for his education. He studied alongside intellectual giants like José Vasconcelos and Alfonso Reyes. They were friends. They met at the Fabela family home in the Santa María la Ribera neighborhood.

After graduating from law school in 1908 Fabela became a lawyer. He even worked for the National Surety Company. But his passions extended beyond the law. He co-founded the Ateneo de la Juventud. This was a group of young intellectuals who shaped Mexican culture.

Fabela’s life intertwined with Mexican history. He supported Madero’s revolution. He later served as a legal advisor to the Constitutionalist army. This led to a career in diplomacy. A critical moment. Mexico had been invaded. Veracruz was occupied by US forces. Fabela helped shape Mexico’s response.

This led to several ambassadorial posts. He represented Mexico in Argentina Brazil Chile and Uruguay. He even helped reorganize the Mexican foreign service. He later served as ambassador to Spain and Germany. He resigned after Carranza’s assassination. His diplomatic work was interrupted by a term as Governor of Mexico State. There he implemented the country’s first animal protection law.

Fabela returned to diplomacy. He represented Mexico at the League of Nations. This was a period of intense international tension. He courageously defended the Spanish Republic against the interference of Hitler and Mussolini. His work was remarkable. He used only moral authority against powerful nations.

In 1946 Fabela became a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. His reputation preceded him. He’d earned the respect of nations he’d defended at the League of Nations. His legacy extended beyond his diplomatic work. He wrote extensively on international law. His anti-imperialist views are clear in works like “The United States Against Liberty”.

This beautiful San Ángel home. The Casa del Risco. It’s a testament to Fabela’s life. A life dedicated to Mexico. A life of diplomacy. A life of principle. It’s more than a museum. It’s a tribute to a man who left an indelible mark on Mexican history.
