Built in 1899 as Isaiah Temple this magnificent building stands before you. It was one of Chicago’s early Reform Judaism synagogues. The Classical Revival style is evident in its golden brick and stone. Famed architect Dankmar Adler designed this structure. It is his last known building. The Isaiah Mission Baptist Church is known for its distinctive form and fine acoustics.

Mahalia Jackson often sang there. Dr King once praised Mahalia Jackson’s voice. He called it a voice that comes only once in a millennium. She was a devout Christian and Civil Rights activist. She joined Dr King in 1966 during the Chicago Freedom Movement. They preached sermons about justice and equality. Mahalia Jackson’s powerful singing and activism were legendary.
