The two monoliths before you stand as a solemn reminder of the sacrifices made in recent conflicts. This is the Iraq & Afghanistan Memorial, unveiled in 2017 by Queen Elizabeth II. The Iraq & Afghanistan Memorial doesn’t depict scenes of battle or heroism. Instead, it focuses on the core values that bind those who serve: duty and service. The memorial is made of two large Portland stone blocks, one inscribed with “Iraq” and the other “Afghanistan”. On the reverse, one bears the word “duty” and the other “service.” This poignant memorial serves as a space for quiet reflection, a testament to the enduring impact of the Gulf, Iraq, and Afghanistan conflicts on British society.
