“Industrial support” might sound dull. However, it hints at the vibrant, bustling past of IR Site 07/18.

Welcome to IR Site 07/18. This 14-acre section was once part of the sprawling Hunters Point Naval Shipyard. It played a vital role in the industrial heart of the facility.

The Hunters Point Naval Shipyard spanned 866 acres in southeastern San Francisco. From 1939 to 1974, it served as a crucial naval hub. This shipyard wasn’t just about building ships. It was a complete support system. IR Site 07/18 formed a part of Former Parcel B. This area supported the larger shipyard. Here, you would have found areas for shipping. There were also ship repair facilities, training grounds, barracks, and offices.

Imagine the scene during World War II. Sailors trained here before deployment. Skilled workers repaired ships damaged in battle. Offices buzzed with logistical planning. Barracks housed countless personnel. The air crackled with activity and purpose.

The Navy also housed the Naval Radiological Defense Laboratory here. It operated from 1946 to 1969. The Shipyard saw much activity. The Navy’s operations unfortunately left a legacy. Soil, groundwater, surface water and sediment became contaminated. Cleanup and restoration efforts are still governed by federal law. Continuous monitoring is essential.

IR Site 07/18 is undergoing extensive cleanup. This ensures a safer future for the community. In October 2023, Parcel B-1 saw demolition and soil cleanup. Historical petroleum contamination at HPNS is currently being addressed. Radiological object recovery also took place in December 2023. Dust and air monitoring remain vital to the process. Stormwater management fact sheets are guiding best practices.

The land tells a story of transformation. What was once a bustling industrial area is now being carefully restored. It is a story of environmental responsibility. It is a story of transformation. It is a story of ongoing commitment. The goal is to return the land to beneficial use.

As you stand here at IR Site 07/18 remember its layered history. It was a hub of activity. Now it is a site of renewal. This ground beneath your feet echoes with stories. These stories speak of naval history. They also speak of environmental stewardship. They echo with ongoing commitment to a cleaner future.
