Did you know Iolani Palace boasts electricity and telephones before even the White House? Iolani Palace stands before us a testament to Hawaiian royalty. It’s the only official royal residence ever built in the United States. Imagine the grandeur the opulence the stories held within these walls.

Iolani Palace was built by King David Kalakaua. He had traveled extensively in Europe. He envisioned a palace mirroring the royal residences he’d seen. Built of brick and concrete it was a marvel of its time. Completed in November 1882 it cost over 340000 dollars. The palace is approximately 140 by 100 feet. It’s two stories high with a basement and four corner towers. Two central towers reach 76 feet high. The architectural style is uniquely described as American Florentine.

King Kalakaua and Queen Liliuokalani ruled from Iolani Palace. After the monarchy ended in 1893 the building became the Executive Building. The new government meticulously inventoried everything. Unneeded items were sold at public auction. Sadly Queen Liliuokalani was imprisoned here for nine months in a small upper-floor room. The quilt she created during her confinement remains a poignant reminder.

In 1930 Iolani Palace underwent interior remodeling. Wood framing was replaced with steel and reinforced concrete. The name Iolani Palace was officially restored in 1935. It became a National Historic Landmark in 1962. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966. Government offices finally vacated the Palace in 1969.

Thanks to diligent restoration efforts many original items have been recovered. Government funding and private donations helped recreate the monarchy-era rooms. Iolani Palace opened to the public as a museum in 1978. The basement houses a photographic display. It also features the Hawaiian crown jewels awards and regalia worn by high chiefs. Today Iolani Palace stands as a living museum. It’s a vibrant reminder of Hawaii’s rich history and its unique place in American history. The birthdays of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapi’olani are still celebrated with special ceremonies. The legacy of Iolani Palace continues to inspire and educate.
