The city was a hive of industry, and the garment business was booming. This is where the International Tailoring Company, founded in 1896 by Jacob L. Reiss, decided to make its mark. They hired Mundie & Jensen, prominent architects of the time, to design their headquarters. And so, in 1915, the International Tailoring Company Building rose ten stories high on Jackson Boulevard. This wasn’t your typical sweatshop. The company prided itself on providing a modern, spacious, and well-lit workspace for its employees. A stark contrast to the cramped and unsafe conditions often associated with garment factories of that era. Over the decades, the International Tailoring Company Building witnessed the evolution of Chicago’s garment industry. In 2008, it earned its rightful place on the National Register of Historic Places, a testament to its architectural and historical significance. Today, the building has taken on a new life as residential condos, a testament to the ever-changing cityscape. It stands as a reminder of Chicago’s industrial past and its ability to adapt and evolve with the times.
