Ever wondered what it’s like to learn in a school where students from 37 countries, representing 16 different religious sects, all gather? Here at the International College (IC) in Beirut, that’s not just a thought experiment, it’s history. Established in 1891, not here in Beirut, but in Smyrna, Turkey, IC began its journey as the American Boys’ School. Now, the International College stands as a testament to the power of education to transcend borders and beliefs. IC’s early days were marked by a modest first graduating class of just five students in 1895. It later expanded, adding an elementary school in 1913 and a French language section in 1926. The college eventually relocated to Beirut in 1936, at the invitation of the American University of Beirut (AUB), serving as its preparatory school, or “The Prep.” Imagine a school where during the Lebanese Civil War, classes continued, with students and teachers from all backgrounds united by their thirst for knowledge. This resilience speaks to the spirit of IC, a spirit that continues to thrive today. IC has grown to become a co-educational institution, boasting two campuses: one here in Ras Beirut and another nestled in the Ain A’ar hills. The Ain A’ar campus, built in 1988, caters to students from preschool through middle school, extending the IC experience beyond the city’s heart. International College offers a diverse range of programs. From the Lebanese Baccalaureate to the French Baccalaureate, the International Baccalaureate, and the American College Preparatory Program, students can tailor their education to their aspirations. Even with these different programs, one thing remains constant: a dedication to community service. Every secondary school student participates in two community projects annually. These range from environmental awareness campaigns to volunteering at orphanages and centers for the elderly and disabled. The International College isn’t just a school.
