Founded in Brussels but based here in Paris, the International Astronomical Union stands as a beacon of global collaboration. Let’s delve into its fascinating story. The International Astronomical Union or IAU is an international non-governmental organization. Its goal is to advance astronomy in all its aspects. This includes research, outreach, education, and development through global cooperation.

The International Astronomical Union was founded on July 28, 1919. It happened at the Constitutive Assembly of the International Research Council in Brussels, Belgium. Its head office is located here in the 14th arrondissement of Paris.

The International Astronomical Union acts as the recognized authority for assigning designations. It also names celestial bodies like stars, planets, and asteroids. It names any surface features on them. This role was formally acknowledged by the United Nations in 1982.

The International Astronomical Union is a member of the International Science Council. Its main objective is to promote and safeguard astronomy. It strives to achieve this in all its aspects. This happens through international cooperation. The IAU also maintains friendly relationships with organizations. These organizations include amateur astronomers in their membership.

The International Astronomical Union has numerous working groups. One example is the Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature. This group maintains the astronomical naming conventions. It also handles planetary nomenclature for planetary bodies. Another is the Working Group on Star Names. It catalogues and standardizes proper names for stars.

The International Astronomical Union is responsible for the system of astronomical telegrams. These telegrams are produced and distributed by the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams. The Minor Planet Center also operates under the IAU. It serves as a clearinghouse for all non-planetary or non-moon bodies in the Solar System.

Initially, seven member states formed the International Astronomical Union. These were Belgium, Canada, France, Great Britain, Greece, Japan, and the United States. They were soon followed by Italy and Mexico. The first executive committee included Benjamin Baillaud from France as President. Alfred Fowler from the UK was the General Secretary. There were also four vice presidents from the US, UK, Belgium, and Italy.

Thirty-two commissions were appointed at the Brussels meeting. They focused on topics from relativity to minor planets. The reports of these commissions formed the main content of the first General Assembly. It took place in Rome, Italy, in May 1922.

By the end of the first General Assembly, ten more nations had joined the Union. This brought the total membership to 19 countries.

As of May 2024, the International Astronomical Union boasts 85 national members. It also has 12,734 individual members from 90 countries and territories. Individual members are professional astronomers and junior scientists.

The sovereign body of the International Astronomical Union is its General Assembly. It includes all members. The Assembly determines IAU policy. It approves the Statutes and By-Laws of the Union. It also elects various committees.

Since 1922, the IAU General Assembly has met every three years. The International Astronomical Union celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019. It organized a year-long celebration to increase awareness of astronomical discoveries. It also aimed to support astronomy as a tool for education and development. The theme was “Under One Sky.”

The International Astronomical Union stands not just as an organization. It embodies a spirit of collaboration and discovery. From its headquarters here in Paris, its influence stretches across the cosmos. It shapes our understanding of the universe.
