“A century’s worth of footsteps echo across the Interlachen Bridge” I began my tour.

The Interlachen Bridge isn’t just a bridge. It’s a silent witness to Minneapolis history. Built in 1900 it’s a marvel of early concrete arch construction. The Melan system made this possible. It’s a significant bridge because it’s the earliest known surviving concrete bridge in Minnesota with a recorded construction date.

Imagine the scene a century ago. William S Hewett designed this bridge. He knew the area needed better access. Streetcars were vital to the community. The bridge provided a connection to the Cottage City streetcar stop. People used this route daily. They rode streetcars to work and to shops. Cottage City thrived.

The Interlachen Bridge spans the Como-Harriet streetcar line. This heritage line runs between Bde Maka Ska and Lake Harriet. It follows the path of the old Twin Cities Rapid Transit line. The Minnesota Streetcar Museum now operates it. You can almost hear the clanging of the old streetcars. Feel the rumble beneath your feet.

After streetcar service ended in 1954 the neighborhood transformed. Cottage City became part of Linden Hills. The old streetcar stop however remains. It’s a reminder of the area’s past. This station is largely intact today a testament to enduring history.

The Interlachen Bridge is more than just concrete and steel. It’s a portal. It links the past to the present. It carries not only cars but memories. Stories of a bygone era are imprinted on every stone. Every arch whispers tales of progress and change. The Interlachen Bridge stands as a symbol of Minneapolis. It’s a bridge to the past a bridge to the future a truly historic structure.
