The Instituto Superior de Agronomia is the largest and most qualified school in Portugal. It offers graduate and post-graduate degrees in agricultural sciences. Its know-how is recognized both nationally and internationally.

For over 160 years, the Instituto Superior de Agronomia has adapted its teaching methods. These adaptions consider technological evolution and the reality of the country. The focus remains on quality and modernization. The Instituto Superior de Agronomia became part of the University of Lisbon in 2013. Before that it was integrated into the Technical University of Lisbon in 1930.

The Instituto Superior de Agronomia has a significant student body. Around 1700 students are enrolled in graduate and undergraduate programs. The faculty comprises over 127 teachers and 44 researchers. Among them are 161 PhD holders.

Its location within Tapada da Ajuda is special. Tapada da Ajuda is a botanical park of recognized interest. This park offers a pleasant space for events. It provides recreational activities and sites for discovery. These sites include the Amphitheatre of Stone and the Astronomical Observatory.

The Instituto Superior de Agronomia also houses the Herbarium Joāo de Carvalho e Vanconcellos. It maintains several collections of spontaneous vascular plants. The Iberian Peninsula collection holds close to 100000 specimens.

Many notable individuals have passed through the halls of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia. Amílcar Cabral was a Guinea-Bissauan independentist and agronomist. Dom Duarte the Duke of Braganza and claimant to the throne of Portugal also studied here. Tim the musician and vocalist of Xutos Pontapés is another alumnus. Gonçalo Ribeiro Telles a landscape architect and politician completes this set of notable alumni.
