Deep within the heart of Rio de Janeiro lies a place dedicated to understanding the human mind in flight the Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica. This institute isn’t just a building. It is a cornerstone of the Brazilian Air Force. It ensures the mental well-being and operational effectiveness of its personnel.

Imagine back in the 1940s. The seeds of what would become the Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica were sown. As the Brazilian Air Force took shape, forward-thinking individuals recognized the need for a dedicated psychology service. This early vision led to the activation of the Serviço de Seleção e Orientação in 1967.

Colonel Aviator Rui Bandeira de Abreu played a pivotal role. He was the first military psychologist of the Brazilian Air Force. He initially headed the Air Force’s Psychometry Service.

The Serviço de Seleção e Orientação initially reported to the Air Force’s Directorate of Education. Its first Chief Colonel Aviator Nelson José de Abreu do Ó de Almeida was tasked with studying the technical and scientific foundations for selecting candidates for Air Force courses.

Over time the Air Force evolved. The demands placed on the psychology service grew. It moved beyond mere psychological selection. These changes mirrored the Air Force’s increasing complexity. It started operating more sophisticated equipment. This evolution spurred the development of psychological science within the Aeronautics. The goal was to ensure that the human element kept pace with technological advancements.

In 1970, the psychology activities of the FAB fell under the responsibility of the Comando-Geral do Pessoal. That same year, the Serviço de Seleção e Orientação was replaced by the Núcleo do Instituto de Seleção e Orientação. The institute underwent another transformation in 1981. It became the Instituto de Seleção e Orientação. Finally, in 1988, it was renamed the Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica.

The Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica has contributed to important national events. In 2003, its personnel were involved in the investigation of the Vehicle Launching Satellite accident at the Alcântara Launch Center. In 2011, representatives from the institute supported Air Force troops in Haiti. They were part of the United Nations Stabilization Mission.

More recently the Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica has been involved in critical humanitarian efforts. Since 2018, it has participated in Operation Welcome. This operation provides humanitarian aid to Venezuelan immigrants. They are fleeing the crisis in their country. Since 2020, the institute has provided psychological support to FAB military personnel deployed on UN Peace Missions.

In 2023, the IPA took part in the inter-ministerial repatriation of Brazilians from Israel during Operation Returning in Peace. Psychologists were sent aboard the KC-30, KC-390 and VC-2 aircrafts. The mental health professionals offered psychological support to the repatriated Brazilians. They also supported the crew involved in the operation. The IPA coordinates the Curso de Psicologia da Aviação. The course aims to improve the operational human performance of crews. It also optimizes flight safety levels of operations.

Today, the Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica continues to evolve. It supports the Brazilian Air Force. It ensures the well-being of its personnel. The institute remains committed to its mission. It offers expertise and knowledge to strengthen the operational capabilities of the Brazilian Air Force.

The Instituto de Psicologia da Aeronáutica stands as a testament to the importance of the human mind in the realm of aviation. It provides essential support. The IPA helps to ensure the safety and effectiveness of the Brazilian Air Force.
