Instituto de Geociências

Stepping into the realm of geological wonders, we find ourselves before the Instituto de Geociências, or IGeo. A vibrant hub of scientific exploration nestled within the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro. The IGeo’s story began in 1967. Established by Decree No. 60 455-A, the Instituto de Geociências quickly became a cornerstone of earth science education. Within the walls of the Centro de Ciências Matemáticas e da Natureza (CCMN) building, on the Cidade Universitária campus, the IGeo coordinates undergraduate courses and postgraduate programs in Geography, Geology, and Meteorology. The Instituto de Geociências is more than just classrooms and labs. It’s a place where the Earth’s secrets are unveiled, where future generations of scientists are nurtured. The IGeo contributes significantly to our understanding of the planet. From the formation of granite and pegmatites to the dynamics of weather patterns, research at the IGeo spans a vast spectrum of Earth sciences. The institute plays a vital role in training geologists, geographers, and meteorologists who contribute to diverse fields, including academic research, mineral and petroleum exploration. The Instituto de Geociências at UFRJ also houses the Labsonda, the UFRJ EPMA lab. This lab has been operational since 2010 under the direction of Dr. Isabel P. Ludka, whose research encompasses diverse areas of geology and mineralogy.
