Founded in 1996 the Instituto de Ecología stands as a testament to Mexico’s commitment to ecological research. It emerged from the Population Ecology Laboratory of UNAM’s Institute of Biology. That humble lab transformed into the Department of Ecology in 1985. The University Council recognized its importance and granted it the status of Center of Ecology in 1988. Finally it achieved its current name and status as the Instituto de Ecología on November 13 1996.
The Instituto de Ecología is more than just a collection of buildings. It is a hub of scientific exploration. It is located on the outer circuit of Ciudad Universitaria. The newest building houses the National Laboratory of Sustainability Science. This lab is at the forefront of innovative research.
Inside the Instituto de Ecología the work is divided into four key departments. There is the Ecology of Biodiversity. Then there is Evolutionary Ecology. After that there is Functional Ecology. And the National Laboratory of Sustainability Science. Each department plays a crucial role.

Finally in 1996 the Institute of Ecology UNAM was founded.
