This private bilingual Methodist school stands proudly on the corner of Avenida 8 de Octubre and Garibaldi in Montevideo. Instituto Crandon has a rich history dating back to 1879.

Cecilia Güelfi a visionary teacher founded it. She established it as the Liceo Evangélico the first school with Evangelical roots in Uruguay. In 1906 the school was renamed Instituto Crandon. This name honored Mrs. Frank P. Crandon an American Methodist.

Instituto Crandon offers education at all levels. It includes maternal initial primary and secondary. The school is known for its strong English program. Home economics has also been a significant part of its curriculum. The gastronomy department has published a bestseller since 1957. It is the Manual de Cocina del Instituto Crandon a highly successful Uruguayan cookbook.

Let’s step back to the early days. Cecilia Güelfi’s dedication shaped the school’s foundation. After her death her brother continued her commitment. He expanded the Evangelical educational institutions. By 1889 these institutions merged into one. It was housed in a building that accommodated teachers and students.

In the 1920s the iconic building of Instituto Crandon began. It opened in 1922 in the Larrañaga neighborhood. In 1923 Radio Sud América General Electric set up its studios there. The primary school annex opened in the 1940s. This shows the school’s growth.

Today Instituto Crandon continues to thrive. It has around 1500 students. The current director Carlos Varela leads the institution. The school has adapted to modern times. It still retains its core values. Instituto Crandon provides advanced English education. It also offers professional gastronomy courses. A night school is also available.
