From a small seed, a mighty tree can grow. This perfectly describes the Institution Salésienne Notre-Dame des Minimes. It started humbly in 1826. Today, it has blossomed into a renowned educational institution. The Institution Salésienne Notre-Dame des Minimes, often called simply “Les Minimes,” stands as a testament to its enduring legacy.
The Institution Salésienne Notre-Dame des Minimes was founded by Father Détard, a diocesan priest. Originally located at Place des Minimes, it served as the cathedral’s boys’ choir school. Imagine the young voices echoing through the hallowed halls. The year 1918 brought significant change. Following the law separating Church and State, Les Minimes relocated to 11 rue des Maccabées, near Saint-Irénée Church. Continued growth led to another move in 1968. This time, the institution settled at 65 rue des Aqueducs, on the former site of a Carmelite convent.
The Salesians of Don Bosco assumed guardianship of the Institution Salésienne Notre-Dame des Minimes in 1961 at the request of Lyon’s Archbishop Gerlier. This marked a new chapter in the school’s history. The Salesian philosophy, focused on fostering confidence, providing meaningful education, and nurturing spiritual growth, became deeply ingrained in Les Minimes’ identity. Today, the Institution Salésienne Notre-Dame des Minimes offers a comprehensive education, from elementary school through high school. It also houses preparatory classes for prestigious business and political science institutes. The school’s motto, “NOMINE NON RE MINIMUS,” translates to “Small in name, but not in reality.” This speaks volumes about its ambition and the achievements of its students. In 2024, the institution expanded further. A new site opened in Fourvière dedicated to higher education and offering student housing. The Institution Salésienne Notre-Dame des Minimes continues to grow and evolve, yet it remains true to its founding principles.
