Established in 1984 Institut Teknologi Indonesia stands proudly. It’s a private university located in Setu Tangerang Selatan. This prestigious institution wasn’t built overnight. It began as a vision. A vision held by prominent figures within the Indonesian Engineers Association PII. They recognized a critical need for more technically skilled engineers. This spurred them to action. They created the Indonesian Technology Development Foundation YPTI.
Professor BJ Habibie a giant in Indonesian engineering led YPTI. His leadership guided the foundation until 2019. He wasn’t alone. Other giants of Indonesian engineering such as Hartarto Aburizal Bakrie Ismet Iskandar Tamudji and G.M. Tambubolon also lent their support. Even former Minister of Education and Culture Professor Wardiman played a crucial role. Their combined vision culminated in the founding of Institut Teknologi Indonesia.
The official inauguration ceremony took place on October 1 1984 at the Graha Purna Yudha building in Jakarta. This date is now celebrated as the university’s anniversary. The university’s founding was formally acknowledged through Yayasan’s Decree No. 01/Kept-YPTI/84 dated June 2 1984. Classes commenced immediately. The strategic location of Institut Teknologi Indonesia is no accident. It sits near Puspiptek the National Science and Technology Research Center. Its proximity to the Serpong Techno Park and industrial areas further solidified its position as a center of technological advancement.
Institut Teknologi Indonesia’s location is not only technologically strategic. It is part of a larger arboretum and experimental garden. The university’s commitment to educating future generations is reflected in its diverse range of undergraduate programs. These include electrical engineering mechanical engineering industrial engineering chemical engineering computer science civil engineering architecture urban and regional planning agricultural industrial technology and management. The university also offers professional engineering programs. It once had mechatronics and automotive engineering programs. But these were discontinued in 2022. The agricultural engineering program was replaced with agricultural industrial technology.
Institut Teknologi Indonesia is more than just classrooms and laboratories. In 2019 it boasted 17 active student activity units and 3 religious activity units. These groups represent a vibrant and engaged student body. These organizations encompass everything from aeromodelling and investment clubs to sports teams and arts groups. They are vital to the life of the campus.
