Nestled in the heart of Jakarta, Institut PTIQ Jakarta stands as a beacon of Quranic knowledge. This isn’t just any university. Institut PTIQ Jakarta holds the distinction of being the first in the world dedicated to the memorization and study of the Quran. Its story begins on April 1, 1971, born from a vision of prominent figures like KH. Mohammad Dahlan, a former Minister of Agama, and KH. Ahmad Zaini Miftach, the Grand Imam of Istiqlal Mosque. They established the Ihya Ulumudin Foundation, the cornerstone of Institut PTIQ Jakarta. The founders recognized a growing need for scholars deeply versed in the Quran, especially with the rising popularity of the Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur’an (MTQ) National competition. Interestingly, Institut PTIQ Jakarta even served as inspiration for the Islamic University of Madinah in Saudi Arabia when it opened its faculty of Quranic studies two years later. Institut PTIQ Jakarta, therefore, truly stands as a pioneer in this field. The university’s mission is clear: to cultivate scholars and scientists of integrity, guided by the Quran’s values. Over the years, Institut PTIQ Jakarta has been led by influential figures in Indonesian Islamic scholarship, including Prof. Dr. H. Nasaruddin Umar, M.A. The university is organized into several faculties, covering Syariah, Dakwah, Tarbiyah, Ushuluddin, and a Postgraduate program. This structure reflects the comprehensive approach to Quranic studies. From its humble beginnings, Institut PTIQ Jakarta has evolved significantly. In 2002, it transitioned from Perguruan Tinggi Ilmu Al-Qur’an Jakarta (PTIQ) to become the Institut Studi Ilmu Al-Qur’an (ISIQ). However, recognizing the iconic status of the name PTIQ, especially among alumni and the MTQ community, the name was eventually changed back to Institut PTIQ Jakarta. In 2023, another transformation took place. Institut PTIQ Jakarta officially became Universitas PTIQ Jakarta, broadening its scope to include not only religious studies but also general sciences. Despite this expansion, the university remains committed to its founding principles, ensuring that its education remains rooted in Islamic values and Quranic teachings.
